Cafe Sketch In-Class Gestures IV

    This week, we had a life model in our morning class so we drew her with some props.  For some of the drawings we had 30 seconds while for others we had a minute or two.

 

In the afternoon we went to the BalletMet in Columbus and drew the dancers having a modern class.  Many thanks to the dancers and the BalletMet for letting us come in and draw them.

Cafe Sketch HW Gestures III

This week for homework in my cafe sketch class, we had to take 15 of our old life drawings and redraw them with cylinder and cube shapes. Then, we had to draw the same figure from the opposite point of view.  I found this exercise difficult, but rewarding.  Drawing a cube around the figure helped me to flip the drawings by giving me a depth of field to work within.

Cafe Sketch In-Class Gestures III

This week, we started our morning class by drawing figures from pixelovely.com.  We were to focus on creating gestures with cylinder and cube shapes that show dimension and perspective.

In the afternoon, we had a model with us and focused on the same drawing principles.  We started with two minute poses and then one minute poses.  I enjoy this method of drawing, because it is quick, but also gives a lot of information and enables  me to go back later and fill in missing information if necessary.

Cafe Sketch HW Gestures II

    This week for homework we had to take 50 of our old life drawing and redraw them with smooth instead of hairy and scratchy lines.  As it turns out, I had a plethora of sketches from last semester with very hairy lines. The original sketches are to the left and the new ones are to the right.

Cafe Sketch In-Class Gestures II

This last Friday, we started with a few exercises to warm up and get are arms moving.

Then, we did drawings from pixelovely.com.  We started with one minute drawings and then moved on to 30 second drawings.  We were supposed to focus on keeping are lines long instead of small and hairy.

In the afternoon, we went to the ice rink to draw the skaters.  I started by observing their movements and drawing stick figures.  They were all very fast, but some practiced the same moves multiple times.  It was very entertaining to watch and draw the talented skaters.

Cafe Sketch In-Class and Homework Gestures I

     I am taking a class called Cafe Sketch this semester, which is all about getting quicker and more skilled at drawing figures in motion.  Animation is an art where speed and the ability to communicate movement are key.  I am excited to be taking this class and producing massive amounts of  gestures.  Here are some of my sketches from last Fridays class.

     Most days we will be drawing figures on location.  Living and breathing people going about their lives.  However, since Friday was the first class, we had a slightly different approach.  We started by making gestures based on pictures from Pixelovely, which were timed to change every two minutes.

Then in the afternoon we drew from a live model.  We started with two minute gestures, then one minute gestures, and ended with 30 second gestures.

Finally, we did a few in which we looked at the model for two minutes without drawing her and drew her pose afterward from memory.  Memory is an important part of drawing gestures, because in the real world people never pose for you, but are always moving.

For Homework I had to do at least 50 drawings either from real life or from video.  We were supposed to choose a subject matter that we were passionate about.  I chose to watch The Phantom of the Opera at the Royal Albert Hall (2011).  I have always loved this musical and also wanted a chance to draw some of the dancers in it.  Being a past (if not very graceful) dancer myself, I have a certain appreciation for dance.
